The Odisha government has collected a fine of around Rs 50 crore from traffic rule violators in the Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar between 2020 and August 2021, Minister of State (Home) Captain Dibya Shankar Mishra informed the State Assembly on Monday.

Addressing the House during the on-going monsoon session of the State legislature, Mishra said, “Around Rs 25.34 crore in penalty has been collected from motorists for traffic rule violations in Bhubaneswar-UPD from 2020 till Aug 2021. While Rs 13.50 crore had been collected in the whole of 2020, Rs 11.83 crore was collected till August this year.”

Giving a break-up of the collected fines, he said while two-wheeler riders paid fines to the tune of Rs 18.04 crore for not wearing helmets (Rs 8.84 crore in 2020 and Rs 9.20 crore till August this year), Rs 1.21 crore (Rs 65.15 lakh in 2020 and Rs 56.06 lakh this year) penalty has been collected from people driving four-wheelers for violating seat belt rules in the State Capital, the minister informed.

Similarly, Rs 11.86 lakh fine was collected from Covid norm violators for not wearing masks in Bhubaneswar, Mishra informed the House.

Similarly, in Cuttack city, Rs 3.65 crore (Rs 2.52 crore in 2020 and Rs 1.12 crore till August this year) fine had been collected from traffic offenders during the period.

Rs 1.41 (Rs 1.07 crore in 2020 and Rs 34.01 lakh till August this year) crore was collected for helmet rule violators while Rs 1.88 lakh penalty was collected for violating seat belt rules in the Millennium City, Mishra stated.

On the other hand, Rs 79.98 lakh had been collected from people for flouting Covid guidelines by not wearing mask in Cuttack, he added.
