In a major boost to medical education in tribal region, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod to the newly-constructed Government Medical College (GMC), Sundargarh under the Sambalpur University (Burla). The NMC has given approval for admission in 100 MBBS seats from 2022-23 academic session.

“Happy to inform the National Medical Commission has approved 100 MBBS seats for Govt Medical College Sundargarh, under Sambalpur University. So, the medical college will now be functional thus fulfilling the State Govt’s vision of promoting medical education in the tribal region,” tweeted Collector and DM Sundargarh.

In a letter to dean/principal of Sundargarh Government Medical College, the NMC wrote, “This permission for starting of above mentioned MBBS course and admission of students will be for such time the first batch of students admitted against the above course appears for the final examination in the subject. The college authorities may take up the matter for recognition of the qualification under section 35(2) of the IMC Act at the time of first batch admitted against the sanctioned intake appears of final examination with National Medical Commission.”

The Commission has further said that it is mandatory to develop a biometric attendance, website on the medical college/institution and display all the information of the college, courses offered, faculty available and their experience of the last 5 years, students joined, and affiliating university.

The institution will be fully responsible to fulfill and maintain norms including the infrastructure both physical and human resource, teaching faculty and clinical throughout the academic year, as stipulated in Regulation of National Medical Commission (NMC).
