A newborn girl was allegedly stolen by an unidentified woman from the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) at Sonepur on Saturday morning. The matter came to the fore after an FIR in this regard was lodged at the Sonepur Town Police Station.

As per reports, one Gajendra Tandi of Sandha village under Birmaharajpur Police limits of the district had admitted his wife Santoshini in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of the DHH on Friday after she complained of labour pain.

Later in the day, Santoshini gave birth to a baby girl. However, due to the unavailability of a bed at the DHH, she and her child were forced to lie on the verandah of the concerned department for post-delivery treatment.

As per the FIR, when Santoshini had gone to the toilet in the morning after handing over her newborn to her mother-in-law, an unidentified woman approached and took the newborn from Santoshini’s mother-in-law on the pretext of holding the baby for sometimes.

However, the woman suddenly disappeared from the spot with the baby girl. Though the family members of Santoshini tried to search the unidentified woman, she could not be traced anywhere.

Following this, Santoshini’s family members informed the DHH authorities. The hospital authorities later lodged a complaint at the Sonepur Police Station in connection with the incident.
