Phulbani: In a heart-rending incident that would hurt the collective conscience of the society, a man was forced to carry the body of his wife alone as medical staff didn’t lend a hand fearing Covid infection.

The incident took place at Phulbani district headquarters hospital. A video of the incident went viral on social media prompting the hospital authorities to assure action against the staff on duty.

According to reports, Balakrushna Kanhar of Motingia village under Phiringia block in the district had admitted his wife who was suffering from Anemia. His wife was undergoing treatment since June 29 and her condition started deteriorating yesterday. She died during treatment on Thursday evening.

After necessary medical formalities, Balakrushna called the Mahaprayan vehicle to carry the body to his home. He requested medical staff to assist him carrying the body from the top floor of the hospital to the hearse van. But, no one came to his rescue fearing Covid infection. Even nobody came forward to take care of his kid present with him at that time.

With no alternative left, Balakrushna carried the body and came down to the hearse van. A video of Balakrushna walking along on the staircase with the body is doing rounds on social media platforms. Even some onlookers were seen witnessing the incident.

Dr Abhay Patnaik, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) said that on-duty staff should assist him in carrying the body on stretcher.
“Staff nurse and Help Desk employees are supposed to assist him in carrying the body. They have been served show cause notice. Action would be taken against them if they fail to give satisfactory explanations,” Patnaik said.
