The brutal murder of Mamita Meher, a young teacher has sent shockwaves across Odisha with major Opposition parties now trying to corner the State government over the sensitive matter. Taking cognizance of the matter, the National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma on Thursday said that Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik should remove the ministers whose names have surfaced in the case to ensure a fair probe.
“We have already written to the Chief Minister and the DGP. Till the inquiry is complete, the ministers should be removed as it has been found in the past that police is unable to discharge its duties under political pressure,” said Sharma.
Sharma further said the Commission is yet to get a response from Odisha government. The Commission will wait for 15 days for the response and might send a team to the State for a review of the case. “We are awaiting a response from the Odisha government. We want Chief Minister should take a note of the atrocities against women which is rising gradually in the State and a strong political will is required to put a check on such incidents,” Sharma added.

On Wednesday, the chairperson of the commission had written to CM Naveen Patnaik to personally take cognizance of this case.
The Commission has also shot off a letter the Director General of Police (DGP) Abhay to immediately arrest all the accused involved in the case and provide safety to the family of the victim.
Mamita’s half-charred body was exhumed from a stadium construction site of Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling in Kalahandi district on October 19, 2021.
Mamita, who was working as a teacher at Sunshine Model School at Mahaling in Kalahandi district had threatened Sahu to expose his alleged extra-marital affairs. She went missing on October 8.
Police on Wednesday revealed that the prime accused Gobinda Sahu, the president of the School Management Committee (SMC) had killed Mamita by strangling her in his car on October 8. Sahu later took the body to the under-construction stadium of the school for disposal and burnt it with the help of cardboards and tyres before burying it.
