Launching a scathing attack on the ruling BJD government, the BJP on Monday raised serious questions over the police investigation into the sensational Mahanga murder case and accused Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of shielding Law Minister Pratap Jena.

Coming down heavily on the ruling party, BJP state president Samir Mohanty said, “Despite being named in the FIR in the Mahanga double murder, the CM has given clean chit to Pratap Jena by allowing the Minister to share stage with him.”

“The court has directed to submit re-investigation report and call data records (CDR) of the accused in the double murder. However, the IIC of Mahanga police station Nihar Ranjan Mohanty is not following the orders. Police's hands are tied as the Law Minister is trying to ‘settle’ the case,” Mohanty added.

The State wants to know who has tied police’s hand to save Pratap Jena, the saffron party leader asked.

Recently on December 4, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court, Salepur had issued a show cause notice to the Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of Mahanga police station

The court asked the IIC to explain by December 10 as to why coercive and punitive action will not be taken against him as per CrPC for not appearing before it and repeatedly buying time for filing reinvestigation report and call detail record (CDR) of three accused in the case.

On November 20, the Salepur JMFC court had directed the police to submit probe status report and CDR of deceased Prafulla Biswal, the prime accused in the case and two associates of Minister Pratap Jena- Sarat Nayak and Bapi Biswal by November 25.

The court had given four days more time to the Mahanga police, till November 29, after it failed to file the reinvestigation status report within the stipulated deadline. However, on November 29, the Mahanga police had sought one month more time to file reports.
