Padma Shri awardee Odissi dancer Guru Mayadhar Raut has been rendered homeless after being evicted from a government quarters in Asian Games Village in New Delhi.

The 90-year-old veteran along with his family had been living there for last couple of years.

Several artistes of the ilk of Kathak maestro late Pandit Birju Maharaj used to live in government quarters in Asian Games Village. However, in 2014, the allotments of quarters to the artistes were cancelled.

After having been served notices by the Housing and Urban Development department of Central government, challenging the notice, the artistes residing in Asian Games Village knocked the doors of the Delhi High Court. However, they lost their cases in last February.

As a next course of action, the occupants were served notices to vacate the quarters by April 25. Opposing this, the artistes yet again knocked the doors of the court, seeking its intervention in their favour.

While the matter is still sub judice, the Odissi guru was evicted on Wednesday which the artiste’s family decried.
