The prime suspect in the disappearance of Kalahandi school teacher Mamita Meher, Gobinda Sahu was nabbed by police in Bolangir on Tuesday evening. Sources said police traced Sahu to a sugarcane field at Budhipadar village under Bangamunda block of Bolangir where he had been reportedly hiding.  He was later taken to Bolangir SP office for detailed questioning in connection with the case. 

The major development came shortly after the police announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh for information on the whereabouts of Sahu. Bolangir SP has also confirmed about the arrest of the suspect Gobinda Sahu.

Addressing the media shortly after the arrest of Gobinda Sahu, Northern Range DIG Deepak Kumar gave the credit to the police for swiftly acting and nabbing the prime suspect in connection with the disappearance case of lady teacher Mamita.

Kumar however also accepted police laxity which is reported to have helped Gobinda escape from the custody on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, Sahu had staged a dramatic escape from police custody when he was detained by the Titlagarh police for questioning in connection with Mamita's disappearance.

Meanwhile, the family members of Mamita identified the articles found near a body that had been exhumed from an under construction site near the Mahaling Sunshine School as those of the missing teacher. 

As per police sources, samples from the exhumed body will be sent for DNA profiling in order to ascertain its’ identity. Meanwhile, hundreds of BJP workers staged a massive rally in Bhubaneswar seeking immediate sacking of minister Dibyashankar Mishra. The party workers scuffled with police while marching towards Lok Seva Bhawan.

Meanwhile, the JCB operator, who had reportedly dug the pit to dispose of the body suspected to be that of the missing lady teacher Mamita, near the under-construction stadium in Mahaling, has been detained by the police.

A police team had exhumed the decomposed body from the site using an earthmover earlier in the day.

As per reports, the stadium construction work was overseen by the prime suspect in the case Gobinda Sahu.

Earlier in the day, Congress activists staged protest outside Bhawanipatna police station alleging the involvement of Dibyashankar Mishra in the disappearance case of the teacher.
