A man working as a laboratory assistant at a college in Bhubaneswar went reportedly missing after jumping into Mahanadi River from the bridge near Jagatpur in Cuttack Town on Sunday morning.

The man has been identified as Debasis Das, a resident of Chauliaganj area in the millennium city. He works as a laboratory assistant at Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar (BJB) Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar.

Das was reportedly heading towards Bhadrak from Bhubaneswar in his car in the morning when he asked the driver to stop the vehicle on the Mahanadi River bridge. 

When the driver stopped the vehicle, Das reportedly rushed out and jumped into the waters. The Driver said Das disappeared in the River water. 

Police rushed to the spot after receiving the information. ODRAF and fire service personnel too reached the spot after receiving information and launched a search operation to trace Das.

“He was travelling from Bhubaneswar to Bhadrak today morning when he asked the driver to stop the car. When the driver stopped the vehicle, we climbed the bridge and jumped into the waters. The driver told that after jumping into the water, he was visible for two to three minutes and then disappeared,” said a friend of Das who went to the Chauliaganj Police Station after hearing about the incident.

“Fire services personnel, Chauliaganj and Jagatpur Police have launched an operation to trace him. He was distressed over some disputes with his brother. However, I do not know the exact reason behind his stress,” added Das's friend.

The family members of Das were also present at the Chauliaganj Police Station.

In a similar incident, a boy and a girl reportedly went missing after jumping into Godhas waterfall under Dharambandha police station of Nuapada district on Sunday. Further details into the incident are awaited.
