Forest department personnel with help from local residents rescued a Gharial from the Puri Main Canal near Hanspal, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, on Friday.

As per reports, locals spotted the crocodile species moving in the canal since a few days. The reptile was spotted in the canal between Pratapnagari and Nuagada areas, triggering fear among the locals.

It is suspected that the reptile swam away from its habitat at Munduli barrage in Cuttack.

"A team of researchers from Nadankanan zoological park are conducting a research for which they have released several reptiles in Satakosia by tagging them with electronic chips. They are tracking the movements of the crocodiles through the chips," said Jasobanta Behera, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO).

"We had traced the Gharial in Puri canal around 3 days ago after receiving information. We contacted the experts of the research team and were in regular touch with them. The water level in the canal was reduced to rescue the crocodile, and finally, we managed to rescue it this morning after failing in our attempt on Thursday," added Behera.
