At least five infants have lost their lives in a month due to some unknown reasons at Chikapar village under Goluru panchayat in Nandapur block of Koraput district.

After the Health department received the report, a medical team has rushed to the area to conduct the health examination of babies in the tribal-dominated village. The health team has submitted a report to the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) in this regard.

As per data of the health team, one Gemal Ramarao’s seven-month-old baby girl died on March 5, Marisma’s daughter died on March 9, another Sundar Rao’s son on March 15 while sons of Marry Naidu and Gemal Lengu succumbed on March 17.

Arun Kumar Padhi, In-Charge CDMO said, “We received a phone call from the local Community Health Centre (CHC) regarding the death of three babies in a month. Accordingly, we sent a medical team for an examination.”

“After reviewing the situation at the village, we learnt that a total of five babies have died in a month in the village. As per the examination conducted by the health team, we found that three of the five babies died due to malaria while another two died due to diarrhoea and aspiration pneumonia, respectively,” informed the in-charge CDMO.
