With a few days left for Diwali, the Odisha government on Saturday accorded permission to traders to sell firecrackers in the capital city during the festival. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on October 24, Monday. 

As per a letter issued by the GA & PG Department, permission has been granted for selling firecrackers at seven places in Bhubaneswar during Diwali-2022.

“…permission is hereby accorded for temporary use of government land in respect of seven different patches as per the land schedule at Annexure-A for selling of firecrackers during Diwali-2022 (this year only) subject to clearance from all concerned departments like DCP Bhubaneswar, Fire, TPCODL, R&B, etc and realization and deposit of ground rent,” read GA & P.G Department letter written to the Additional Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The locations where the sale of firecrackers has been permitted are Sabarasahi Melan Padia (Gadakana Mouza), Rasulgarh Durga Mandap (Bomikhal Mouza), Palasuni Biju Pattnaik Play Ground (Pandra Mouza), Unit-I High School Back side (Bapuji Nagar Mouza), Laxmisagar Melan Padia (Laxmisagar Mouza), in front of Baragada Crematoria (Badagada Mouza) and Backside of BDA Market (Badagada Mouza).

The BMC has been asked to collect ground rent from the traders at Rs 160 per 100 sqft per day as fixed by the erstwhile GA Department now GA & P.G Department. 

“Ground rent so collected from the applicants shall be deposited by BMC immediately in the proper Head of account i.e 0070-Other Administrative Service-60-Other Services-800-Other receipts(D)-Fees for temporary use of Govt land in State Capital General Administration Department and submit a report to the G.A & P.G Department,” the GA & P.G Department letter added.

As per the BMC, the government previously allowed selling of firecrackers at 21 places in the city. With this new addition, the number of places designated temporarily for selling of firecrackers during Diwiali 2022 in Bhubaneswar reached 28.
