Environmentalist and president of Lok Shakti Abhiyan Prafulla Samantara on Friday threatened to launch a massive agitation across the State next month protesting against the alleged unlawful arrest of protestors of JSW steel plant in Dhinkia of Jagatsinghpur.

Addressing a presser, Samantara alleged that environmental clearance was given to the proposed plant in violation of guidelines. He also alleged police highhandedness.

"Debendra Swain, who was leading the protest against the JSW plant, has been arrested. More than 24 persons have been arrested on false charges and are being tortured in the custody," Samantara alleged.

"Through the media, we appeal to the government to immediately stop police atrocities and withdraw their camps. The government should release Debendra Swain and others who have been implicated in false cases," the environmentalist said.

He demanded the release of all the arrestees and threatened massive protests across the State.

"We expect all the political parties including the Opposition in the State to take measures to stop the torture of people by police. If the government does not take steps to stop the police atrocities and release the arrested persons, we will launch a massive public protest in the month of May," Samantara said.
