High drama unfolded at Bhubaneswar airport on Thursday after a young couple sought police protection to keep them safe from their family incensed over their love affair and decision to tie the knot with each other.

The couple who arrived at Bhubaneswar airport from Bengaluru on Thursday sought protection anticipating violence by the girl’s family. Soon the Airport Police sprang into action and moved the couple to the Police station under escort.

As per reports, the girl who is from Odisha, studies medicine in Bengaluru, while her boyfriend is a Punjabi and works at a private organization in the same city.

Notably, both of them had come in contact a few years ago but unfortunately had to separate due to pressure from the girl's parents. Recently the duo made up their minds to marry each other after coming in contact with each other. But the family of the girl in Odisha still stood dead against the decision.

On Thursday, the police station saw a tensed situation when both the families reached the spot and started accusing each other.

The girl’s father in particular was adamant to take his daughter back to home and made it clear that he cannot accept the Punjabi boy as his son-in-law.

“Every father wants a good husband for his daughter. The boy should be at a level to marry my doctor daughter. I do not want to discuss with the boy’s family, because it is all planned by them,” the father of the girl said.

He even went on to allege that the boy had withdrawn Rs 2 lakh from his daughter’s account some years back and the issue was resolved in the police station.

However, the boy’s family is eager to get the duo married. Speaking to OTV, the boy's mother Gurjeet Kaur said, “They are adults. If they like each other, I think they should be allowed to marry. It will make all happy.”
