After carrying out intensive drives on roads to discipline motorists, the Commissionerate Police has now launched a crackdown against shops selling modified noisy silencers which are quite popular among youngsters driving high-end motorbikes in Bhubaneswar.

Several modified silencers were seized during raids on shops located in Khandagiri and Cuttack road areas by six separate teams of the Commissionerate Police on Tuesday.

Sources said the crackdown was launched to keep a check on the rising noise pollution level and extensive use of modified silencers by several people during campaigning for the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections.

It is alleged that several bike owners are removing the muffler of the custom-made silencer for louder noise, or replacing the original with modified once to get the bass-effect. Such modified silencers are mostly used in Enfield Bullet motorcycles and other high-end bikes which create much inconvenience to the commuters on the road as they emit high decibel noise.

Senior officials of Commissionerate Police said that several spare parts stores, showrooms and bike points were raided in different parts of the city during the drive.

“The use of modified silencers are attributing to the rise in noise pollution level. Under the Motor Vehicle Act, no modification in vehicles can be done without necessary permission from the concerned Regional Transport Officer (RTO),” said a police official who is part of the raiding team.

By conducting the raids today, we want to ensure that such modified silencers are checked at the selling point or the source itself.
