Commissionerate Police on Saturday launched a probe into the death of Dusmanta Das who had attempted suicide by slitting his wrist and consuming poison in front of the Odisha Assembly on Wednesday over alleged negligence and denial of treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital.

The investigation of the case which was initially carried out by the Kujang police station in Jagatsingpur has been transferred to a police station in Cuttack on Saturday.

“The mother of the deceased had earlier lodged an FIR at the Kujang police station. However, the Commissionerate Police took over the case as the death occurred under its jurisdiction,” said Police Commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi.

“The case will be investigated from all aspects based on the FIR. If required, action will be taken against the culprit/s,” said Priyadarshi.

It is worth mentioning that Dusmanta, a native of Kujang area in Jagatsinghpur district, took the extreme step while the Monsoon Session of the State legislature was in progress.

Authorities at the SCB Hospital in Cuttack, where Dusmanta was allegedly turned back without proper treatment prompting him to make the suicide bid outside the State Assembly, have refuted the charges of any medical negligence or denial of access to treatment.

The Odisha Assembly had also witnessed massive uproar over the tragic incident with several Opposition members storming the well of the House by shouting slogans against the government. They demanded a thorough probe into the incident.
