Students of Mahapurusa Achyutananda (Degree) Mahavidyalaya at Nemal in Cuttack on Monday staged a dharna in front of the main gate of the institution demanding reduction in readmission fees.

The agitating students alleged that though the college authorities have been collecting a huge amount towards the development fund during the Plus 3 readmissions, no noteworthy development works are being carried out.

“The readmission fee is much higher in our college in comparison to other institutions. Our college does not have NCC and students’ union election has not been conducted for the past four years. Besides, no development works are being undertaken. However, we are being asked to pay the development fees. Therefore, we demand reduction of the readmission fees,” said Barsarani Pradhan, a girl student.

Another student Aditya Kumar Sethy said, “Our institution does not have a magazine or calendar. But fees are being collected for those purposes. We do not have a bicycle stand and proper desks for the students. We demand development of the infrastructures apart from reduction of readmission fees. We will continue our agitation until our demands are not fulfilled.”

Reacting to the allegations of the students, College Principal Niranjan Satpathy said, “The fees which are collected now were approved by the then college managing committee in May 2018. We urge the students to attend classes and assure them that we will draw the attention of the higher authorities. Accordingly, a decision will be taken in this regard.”
