At least 22 persons sustained severe injuries after Chilika MLA Prashant Jagdev allegedly rammed his vehicle into a crowd assembled in front of Banpur block in Khordha district before the Chairman election on Saturday.

Khordha Superintendent (SP) Alekh Chandra Pahi informed that seven police personnel have also sustained grave injuries in the incident. “Banpur IIC is also among the seven police personnel who have sustained injuries, said Pahi.

"As many as 15 supporters of different political parties were also injured in the accident. Chilika MLA has also sustained grievous injuries after being attacked by an irate mob. Initially, the legislator was admitted to Tangi hospital and later shifted to Bhubaneswar,” said Pahi.

He further said, “No casualty has been reported in the incident yet. We have launched an investigation into the incident and appropriate action will be taken against the culprit."

The condition of one person among the injured, who have been admitted to the Banpur Primary Health Centre, is critical, informed Dr Surya Meher.

“Initially the IIC along with four other civilians was admitted to the PHC. Later, six to seven police personnel and other civilians were admitted to the hospital. One of the injured is in critical condition as he has high blood pressure. One lady among the injured has suffered a fracture,” said Meher.

As tension is running high in the area following the incident, armed police personnel have been deployed in the region to keep the situation under control.

“The existing number of police personnel has been augmented and two more platoon police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident,” said Khordha Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).

In September 2021, the ruling BJD had suspended Jagdev after he allegedly thrashed Balugaon Nagar BJP president Niranjan Sethi in the public glare.
