The Centre has approved the repatriation of Sunil Kumar Bansal, Special Director of Intelligence Bureau to his parent cadre Odisha, where he will take over as the new Director-General of Police (DGP).

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued an order yesterday allowing a home ministry proposal for the pre-mature repatriation of Bansal, a 1987 batch IPS officer.

A notification regarding the appointment of Bansal as the head of the police force in the State was issued by the Odisha Home Department on December 15.

Bansal will succeed incumbent Abhay who will retire on December 31 this year after completing his two-year tenure. He is likely to assume charge from January 1, 2022, for two years.

The Odisha Government in October had sent three names to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the appointment of the State DGP. Apart from Bansal, the other two police officers were-- Pradeep Kapur (1986 batch) and Manoj Chhabra (1988 batch).

Bansal had gone on central deputation in 1994 and since then had held many vital posts in the Intelligence Bureau (the wing that looks after the internal security of the country).

Prior to moving to the Centre, Bansal had held the post of additional SP Dhenkanal, Talcher SDPO and additional SP Sambalpur. He was also Mayurbhanj SP and Vigilance SP at Sambalpur.
