In an unfortunate incident, body of an elderly person left to rot for 31 hours after death as villagers declined the deceased’s family members to do the last rites in village crematorium.

The shocking incident took place at Gulibadana village under Umerkote police limits in Nabarangpur district.

According to sources, Jitru Bhatra, an elderly person of Gulibadana village died on Friday. However, tension ran high at the locality after the deceased’s family members were not allowed to cremate the body at the village crematorium because the deceased had allegedly converted to other religion three-four years back.

Thanks to stubborn villagers, the body of Jitru was left to rot for 31 hours. District administrative officials and police forces were deployed to maintain law and order situation at the village.

The body was taken to another place outside the village after the district administrative officials failed to convince the superstitious villagers.

Umerkote Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Subhechhu Sabar said, “Following the intervention of police and district administration, the matter was resolved. The body of the deceased was carried to different place outside the village. The local tehsildar has identified a place outside the village where the body will be buried.”

He went on to add: “I must say the district administration should bring such matter to our notice to avoid any untoward incident.”
