A leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sustained critical injuries after being allegedly attacked by three bike-borne miscreants with sharp weapons at Chanpur village under Patkura Police limits in Kendrapara district on Sunday.

Prajesh Nayak, who is a district-level General Secretary of the party, was initially admitted to Patkura Community Health Centre (CHC) and later shifted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after his condition deteriorated. 

A former sarpanch of Bangalpur panchayat in the district, Nayak suffered critical injuries on his legs and other parts of his body.

As per reports, the BJP leader was on his way to a local market while three persons came on a bike and attacked him with sharp weapons leaving him grievously injured.

"I was riding pillion with my friend and going to a medicine store at a nearby market. The trio identified as - Sarada Prasad Samal and his uncle Nira Samal and Saroj Samal came on a bike and hacked me with a sharp weapon in public," said Nayak, denying any past rivalry with the attackers.

Based on a complaint, Patkua Police registered a case and detained two persons in this connection. They are being questioned, police said.
