Launching a broadside at the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government, the State unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday termed the flood in the Mahanadi River as man-made.

The saffron party also accused the government of failing in flood management

After returning from flood-affected areas, BJP leaders fired salvo at the government. The party asked the government to apologise to the people of the State for not being able to manage the flood situation effectively.

“The flood is purely man-made and the government is squarely responsible for it. It is the government’s negligence and mismanagement that caused the flood. The Government has failed in managing the flood situation. Flood-hit people are yet to receive relief materials. People’s properties and crops have been damaged. For this, the government should apologise to the people of the State,” said State BJP General Secretary Prithviraj Harichandan.

Congress spokesperson Nishikanta Mishra said, “The rule curve of Hirakud dam was flouted which caused such a severe flood situation. The State government has not provided a sheet of polythene even to one flood victim. The government has failed both in managing the flood and the situation emerged thereof.”

In its response, the BJD said the State government has managed the flood situation properly.

“It is an inappropriate time to do politics. The SRC had been monitoring the situation. A team of officials and persons with technical expertise have managed the situation very nicely,” said School and Mass Education Minister Sameer Dash.

Meanwhile, on the basis of media reports on proper management of flood in the Mahanadi River, the Water Resources department has asked the Engineer-in-Chief to submit a report in comparison with the floods that occurred in 2011 with the current floods in the Mahanadi River system.

It has been said that the flood could have been avoided had it been managed with proper coordination with Chhattisgarh.

“We are preparing a report on the flood management and then we will submit it to the government,” said Engineer-in-Chief of Water Resources department Bijay Mishra.
