A class 10 girl student in Odisha allegedly took her own life after she was asked to join physical classes at the school which re-opened recently after remaining shut for the past several weeks on account of the pandemic guidelines.

As per reports, the girl, who lived with her family at Bhimarangiri village in Malkangiri district took the extreme step on Friday evening after being forced by her parents to rejoin the school.

The father of the girl told reporters that following the reopening of the schools from February 7, he and his wife advised her to join the offline classes which she refused.

Seeing the girl’s stubbornness, her parents reprimanded her for the rude behaviour. Unable to bear the scolding, the girl believably consumed some pesticide which was kept in the house in a bottle.

She was immediately rushed to the Malkangiri district headquarters hospital (DHH) for treatment. Though doctors at the hospital put in all efforts to save her, she breathed her last on Saturday morning.

Classes from standard 8 to 12 and all higher educational institutions in Odisha resumed physical mode of teaching from February 7 while students of KG and class 1 to 7 will return to their schools from February 28.
