The body of an elderly woman was found under mysterious circumstances at her house in Sivaji Nagar area of Umderkote in Nabarangpur district on Friday.

The 82-year-old deceased woman, identified as Kusum, wife of one Bhagirathi Nayak, was found in a decomposed condition in one of the rooms at her house.

As per reports, Kusum and Bhagirathi had three sons out of which the eldest son was unemployed.  After Bhagirathi’s death in 2002, Kusum moved to her eldest son’s family where she lived with her son and daughter-in-law.

The family somehow managed affairs with the pension that Kusum continued to draw after her husband’s death.

But unfortunately, she also lost the eldest son six months ago. It is being alleged that Kusum’s daughter-in-law was not having good terms with her and her frail health went from bad to worse over the last six months.

On Thursday, Kusum’s body was recovered after foul odour emanated from the room. Based on the allegations of foul play levelled by Kusum’s younger daughter-in-law, police have registered an offence in connection with the death.

“The exact cause of the death of the woman will be clear from the post-mortem reports,” said Jaykrushna Behera, Additional SP, Nabarangpur.
