In an unfortunate incident, an eight-year-old boy lost his life after he consumed poison kept at his house, assuming it to be cold drinks on Tuesday. The tragic incident has been reported from Udaypur village under Khaira block in Balasore district.

The deceased has been identified as Manas Dash, 8, son of Pabitra Dash. Manas was a Class IV student at a local school, sources said.

Manas as usual had gone to his school on Tuesday. He returned home and found the pesticides at the house. Thinking it was cold drinks, he consumed it and went for his lunch. Soon after, he experienced vomiting.

However, he did not tell anything to his family members fearing his father. Family members came to know about it after his condition worsened.

He was first rushed to Agarpada Community Health Centre (CHC). After preliminary treatment, he was rushed to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital after his condition worsened. However, the little boy breathed his last while undergoing treatment.

The incident has spread a pall of gloom in the village. Family members were shattered as he was the only son of the family.

“After he returned from school, I gave him Rs 100 to give rice. I advised him to get the rice for Rs 90 and spent the remaining Rs 10. Soon, he complained of diarrhoea. I took him to the bathroom two-three times. When I asked him about it, he did not say anything. Later, he informed his mother that he had consumed the pesticide. I had brought the pesticide to spray in the crops,” said the child’s father Pabitra Dash.

The boy’s mother Manorama Dash said, “I did not know that he had consumed poison. I had gone to work at the farm. When I returned home, he asked for food. But, he started vomiting. My husband is innocent, he had not kept the pesticides intentionally.”

“He consumed the poison by mistake. He was admitted to hospital, but he breathed his last. This is deeply saddening. We held a mourning in the school for him,” said the school headmaster Sasibhushan Jena.
