Police on Monday morning rescued a three-year-old girl, sitting next to the body of her mother, from a rented house near Shiva temple in Sagarpada area in Bolangir.

Preliminary investigation by the Bolangir Town Police suggested that baby girl’s mother might have died some two-three days back. The girl, who has been reportedly starving since the last three days, has been provided water and food by the neighbours.

The woman used to work as domestic help in the locality and lived with her only daughter in the one-room house.

“She came here around one-and-half years back with the baby and told us that she was disowned by her parents as well as her in-laws. She asked me to allow her to live in the vacant room in the premises of my house so that she can earn and raise her child. I allowed her. Since then, she used to work as domestic help in several houses in the locality and earn a living,” said the owner of the house.

“She used to fall sick often. I asked her daughter, playing outside the house, yesterday about her mother to which the toddler replied that she was sleeping. Today, the child told the neighbours that some insects are coming out of her mother’s mouth. The neighbours informed us and we immediately rushed to the woman’s house. Foul smell was emanating from the room. We immediately informed the police,” the owner added.

On the other hand, the three-year-old child still, on being asked answered that her mother was sleeping.

“My mother is sleeping since the last two days. I was sleeping next to her. She did not give me food and continued sleeping,” told the toddler.

Meanwhile, Bolangir Town Police has reached the spot and started an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the death of the woman. Police have also seized the decomposed body of woman and sent it for post-mortem.
