Days after Cyclone Yaas tore through Balasore and Bhadrak districts in Odisha, locals of Charigacchia Talasahi under Balasore Sadar block marooned by saline water are now allegedly infected by diarrhoea.

As per the allegations, the locals are forced to drink contaminated water and food in this time of distress causing diarrhoea.

It is also alleged that though the government has been claiming that all the affected people are provided with assistance, they are being ignored.

A local alleged, "Our borewell was damaged in the cyclone induced flood, so we have to drink the polluted water to survive. The damaged borewell was repaired only today. As far as food is concerned, it has only been biscuits and puffed rice.”

Meanwhile, ANM and ASHA workers were seen distributing medicines in the area. While speaking to the media, Ramani Jena, an ASHA worker said, “We are distributing Halogen tablets, Paracetamol and other pills for loose motion including ORS packets to keep them hydrated.”

Denying the outbreak of diarrhoea, Dr Mrutyunjay Mishra, the ADMO of Balasore said, “We have got reports of sporadic loose motion cases from Charigacchia which has a population of just above 1100. It is not diarrhoea.”

“Our medical team has already visited the place and sensitised the locals about hygiene. Their borewell systems have been cleaned. And they have been provided with medicines to keep themselves safe untill the flood water recedes,” added Mishra.

It is pertinent to mention here that at least 25 villages in Balasore are still cutoff from the main land after the sea water marooned them in the cyclone.
