Malkangiri: Armed Maoists set afire and damaged several machines, equipment and vehicles at a road construction site in Orissa`s Malkangiri district early today, police said.

A large number of rebels, including women struck at the site at Pandraguda on the state highway between Jeypore and Khairput and overpowered the securitymen, Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), U S Das said.

The ultras torched at least two JCB machines and other equipment besides two tractors at the site located in the mountanous area and disappeared into the forest nearby after causing destruction, he said.

A handwritten poster was also left by the Maoists at the site asking the authorities to immediately halt road work and launch activities for the poor, police said.

The rebels also demanded withdrawal of security forces from the region, they said.
