Freelancing
Freelancing is emerging as a preferred career path for Odisha’s urban youth, driven by growing access to the internet, a rise in gig platforms, and changing perceptions about traditional employment. Fields like content writing, web development, digital marketing, and graphic design are witnessing a surge in independent professionals, especially among recent graduates.
Cities like Rourkela and Bhubaneswar are seeing young people move away from 9-to-5 roles, drawn to the flexibility and autonomy that freelancing offers. Online platforms have allowed skilled individuals to work with global clients while living in smaller cities or even semi-urban areas.
Skill centres in Odisha are adapting to this trend by offering short-term certifications in high-demand freelance skills. Institutes now provide career counselling sessions focused on building online portfolios, payment systems, and client acquisition. The State Government’s focus on digital skilling and start-up incubators has also provided a supportive environment.
Despite the appeal, challenges remain — including inconsistent income, lack of legal frameworks for freelancers, and the need for self-discipline. However, many are willing to take the risk for the rewards of self-direction and diverse project opportunities.
Tarunesh Jharia, a freelancer said, "Freelancing means working for yourself and offering your skills to different people or companies. You’re not tied to one boss or job. You can choose what work to do, when to do it, and where to do it from, even from your home. People like writers, designers, and programmers often freelance. It gives freedom, but you have to find your own work and manage your time well. Sometimes, money isn’t steady, and you don’t get things like paid holidays. Still, freelancing is a great way to work if you enjoy being your own boss and want more control over your life."
Rudra Avilash, a local businessman said, "While younger generation is inclining more towards freelancing, it is not good for their future. As long as it is a side hustle, that is good but it should not be a career choice. Though companies and businesses would profit more by not hiring permanent employees, it is not good for the future aspirants who are planning to work for private organisations."
