Pakistan's ambassador to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamal
Pakistan's ambassador to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, warned that Islamabad would respond with the "full spectrum of force," including nuclear weapons, if attacked or if the vital water flow from the Indus River is disrupted. His remarks come amidst rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which left 26 people dead, mostly tourists.
Jamali emphasized that any attempt by India to usurp, stop, or divert the flow of water under the Indus Waters Treaty would be viewed as an "act of war." He reiterated Pakistan's readiness to counter such moves with "full force, including nuclear." This statement marks a significant escalation in the rhetoric surrounding the already tense relationship between the two nuclear-armed nations.
While issuing the threat, the Pakistani ambassador also called for de-escalation between the two nations. Jamali acknowledged the grave risk posed by the nuclear capabilities of both countries and underscored the need for diplomatic efforts to avoid a potential catastrophe. The ambassador's comments underscore the delicate balance of power in the region and the international concerns surrounding a nuclear conflict.
Jamali reiterated Pakistan's demand for a "neutral and credible investigation" into the Pahalgam terror attack, with hopes that countries like China and Russia could play a role in the process. He linked the attack to the unresolved political issues surrounding Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the right to self-determination for the Kashmiri people, which Pakistan believes is crucial for lasting peace. Furthermore, Jamali expressed frustration over the recurring blame placed on Pakistan, urging for a fair and comprehensive investigation to prevent further escalation.
Following the escalation, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar engaged in diplomatic talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to seek Moscow's assistance in easing tensions. The call for Russia's intervention highlights the global stakes of the ongoing conflict and the role of international powers in mitigating further violence.
