IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra elected Vice President of World Meteorological Organisation

Apart from Mohapatra two other persons were also elevated to the position of Vice President of the WMO. They are-- Eoin Moran, Director of Met Éireann from Ireland and Daouda Konate, director of meteorology of Cote d'Ivoire.

Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Thursday was elected as one of the Vice Presidents of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

The development was informed by the WMO through a tweet.

Apart from Mohapatra two other persons were also elevated to the position of Vice President of the WMO. They are-- Eoin Moran, Director of Met Éireann from Ireland and Daouda Konate, director of meteorology of Cote d'Ivoire.

Mohapatra from Odisha is known as the cyclone man of India. He has been heading the apex weather office of the country since 2019.

World Meteorological Organisation is the United Nation’s authoritative voice on weather, climate, and water.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan congratulated Mohapatra and wrote, "Congratulate Shri Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on being elected as the Vice-President of World Meteorological Organisation! An expert widely known as the ‘cyclone man of India' for accurately predicting cyclone phenomena, may he shine in his new role and provide leadership in weather and climate-related services for the well-being of all nations."

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also extended wishes to Mohapatra and tweeted, "Congratulate Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director of India Meteorological Department, on being elected as 3rd Vice-President of World Meteorological Organisation. I am sure, with his vast experience in Meteorology, he will continue to scale new heights and make #Odisha & the country proud. Wish him a successful tenure ahead."
