Bhubaneswar: A hi-tech ‘Examination Cell’ equipped with modern audio-video recording facilities was opened at Capital Police Station here today.

The aim is to do away with traditional method of questioning and bring in more transparency in the interrogation process.

“The facilities will be made available in other police stations in Bhubaneswar as well as in Cuttack in a phased manner. The facility would bring transparency in the interrogation process," informed Khurania.

The cell consists of three chambers. In the first chamber of the cell, the lawyers and relatives of the accused can directly watch the interrogation process with prior permission from the court.

The second chamber will be used to record statements of the suspects while the third chamber will be used to store audio-video recordings of the examination cell.

Moreover, the facilities will help the police officials prove their innocence in cases where the accused allege torture in custody. It will also help the cops deal with cases where the accused confess to have committed the crime during interrogation in police custody but later deny the same in Court.

"The entire interrogation process of accused, suspects and victims will be recorded in the examination cell. Therefore, if there is any allegation against any investigating officer, about the interrogation process, the officer concerned can produce the tape to prove his innocence," informed the CP.
