The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar is grappling with shortage of staff with close to 1,500 lying vacant in the premier healthcare institute. 

Information obtained through an RTI application revealed that as many as 1,493 sanctioned teaching and non-teaching posts are lying vacant at the hospital. 

The RTI application was filed by rights activist Akhand seeking information about the vacancies at the institute. Replying to the RTI query, AIIMS CPIO & Administrative Officer DC Pattnaik stated that the institute has a total of 305 sanctioned faculty posts of which 226 are filled up and 79 are lying vacant as on April 30, 2022.

Similarly, out of the total 3,876 sanctioned non-faculty posts, 2462 have been filled up while 1414 are lying vacant as on April 30, 2022. The vacancy of teaching post is 25 per cent while it is 36 per cent in case of non-teaching posts. 

The RTI reply further revealed that a total of 478 teaching and non-teaching posts have been filled up in the last two years. However, 1493 sanctioned posts are yet to be filled up.   

While expressing concern that the vacancies may affect the healthcare delivery and academic activities at the institute, Akhand sought immediate measures for filling up of the vacancies.
