Cancer cases have been on the rise for the last few decades. With changing lifestyles different types of cancers are now being traced that were unheard of a decade ago. Apart from pollution, changing working scenarios, and lack of exercise, many other factors have contributed to the increase in the risk of cancer. However, by shifting to healthier and better daily choices you can surely reduce your risk of this deadly disease.

Talking to India Today, Dr. Mridul Malhotra, Sr. Consultant & Head-Medical Oncology, at Asian Hospital Faridabad said that the link between various types of cancer and lifestyle habits goes beyond excessive alcohol consumption and smoking tobacco. Research has shown that certain lesser-known factors also can play a role in the development of different types of cancers.

Poor oral hygiene

Not only tobacco, but poor oral hygiene can also increase the chances of getting oral cancer. If you are suffering from chronic inflammation and mouth infections, you need to immediately seek medical help.

Infections

Certain infections such as hepatitis B and C viruses, human papillomavirus (HPV), and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) have been linked with increased chances of certain types of cancers such as liver, stomach, and cervical cancers.

Environmental and occupational exposures

According to Dr. Malhotra, exposure to pesticides due to eating fruits and vegetables cultivated conventionally is one of the main reasons why cancer is on the rise. Even exposure to certain toxins and chemicals at the workplace such as radon, benzene, and asbestos increases the risk of different types of cancers.

Stress

Stress can have a disastrous impact on health and increase the chances of cancer.

Excessive exposure to the Sun

India is a tropical country and hence except for a few months most of the time the temperature is hot with the sun shining brightly all through the day. While daily exposure to sunlight is recommended for getting your dose of Vitamin D excessive exposure can lead to increased chances of getting skin cancer and melanoma.
