The World Nature Conservation Day is being observed across the globe today. We can’t think about life without the environment. In other words, it can be said that for the sustainability of life, the environment plays a vital role. The main motto behind the observance of the day is to create awareness among people about the importance of the environment, natural resources and wild animals.

In our daily life, we all depend on natural resources including water, gas, air, fuel, soil, trees, food and minerals. Any unbalance in their availability would have an adverse impact on us. This is why the governments of different countries have formulated certain laws and rules to protect the environment, natural resources and wild animals. And it is not wise to leave everything for the governments to do. We should also rise to the occasion and do something.

Our baby steps towards the conservation of nature at the local level would definitely go a long way in protecting global nature. By saying no to plastic, polythene bags, and animal products, and minimizing the use of water, electricity, and fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas, we can bring about a considerable change.

We have certain natural resources that are limited. So, we should use them judiciously. We should always think of alternatives for petrol and diesel to run our vehicles. With the rise in the population, the number of vehicles is also increasing. The increase in the number of vehicles results in an increase in the consumption of petrol and diesel. At the same time, the emission from these vehicles is causing air pollution, causing adverse impacts on the environment. This is why, the use of zero-emission vehicles is being encouraged.

Most of us are also not using water and electricity judiciously. As a result, knowingly or unknowingly we are wasting them. So, we should use as less water as possible. The same goes for electricity as well. The time has come we all should switch over to solar power. Similarly, to protect nature, all of us should plant trees, at least one each and take steps to protect wild animals.

At the same time, we should think about recycling and reusing of certain things whereby the pressure on the resources can be minimized to a great extent. By employing a rainwater harvesting structure, we can save rainwater from going to waste and reuse it. Similarly, we should think about how paper, tin, aluminium foils, glass and plastic bottles or containers can be recycled and reused.

The earth has provided us with everything required for our sustainability. On the other hand, we are destroying them for our own benefit. For example, we are mining more mineral ores than necessary.

We are setting up colonies and factories by felling trees in jungles. We are poaching wild animals. In the long run, it is we who should face the consequences of our mindless acts. So, on this day, we all should take a pledge to save the environment.
