Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Today

A total lunar eclipse will take place today, March 14, during the full moon phase. This event is significant as it coincides with the culmination of Holi celebrations, adding a rare celestial spectacle to the festive atmosphere.

What Happens During a Total Lunar Eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow over the Moon.

The Moon passes through the Earth's umbra (darkest part of the shadow), turning it into a deep red or copper hue. This phenomenon is often called the ‘Blood Moon’.

The red colour appears due to Rayleigh scattering, where Earth's atmosphere filters out blue light and allows only red wavelengths to reach the Moon.
