  • Nathuram Godse has emerged as a cult personality for many in the last more than a decade.
  • Surprisingly, there is now a temple of Godse who was earlier hated and abused for killing Gandhiji.

Mahatma Gandhi also known as the Father of the Nation in India played a critical role in India’s freedom movement. His movements of non-violence and satyagraha forced the British government to mend their rules according to the demands of the Indians. Gandhiji was shot at gunpoint by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948 while he was returning from his prayers.

That is why 30 January is observed as Shaheed Diwas in India. Nathuram Godse was arrested immediately after he gunned down Gandhiji and was hanged a year later. At that time there was a lot of uproar against Veer Sawarkar and RSS as Godse promoted the ideologies of Veer Sawarkar and belonged to the RSS clan.

The Hindus, especially the upper cast Brahmins faced a lot of criticism and wrath and had to hide themselves to protect their lives and families. However, at that time the general mindset was such that Godse was the assassin and he should be hanged. Nevertheless, now decades later, the viewpoint of many people towards Nathuram Godse has changed with many saying that what he did was right from his perspective.

Plays and movies like “Why I Killed Gandhi” released in 2022 have thrown light on the perspective of Godse.

Why do some nationalists consider Godse a patriot?

Godse was a strong Hindu nationalist who believed that after the partition all Muslims should move to Pakistan and India should be a 100% Hindu nation. He was against Gandhiji’s ideology of secularism where equal rights for all citizens was at the forefront. Over the years especially after the change in power at the center from 2014 onwards, more people who believe in Godse’s viewpoint have come forward.

Apart from that with the bomb blasts and terrorism threats lurking in the country people have become aware that even Indian Muslims are supporting such types of terrorist activities. When the Hindus are now being forced to establish identities of their idols and places of worship, there has been a big awakening across the country with many nationalists now believing that Nathuram Godse had a valid reason for going against Gandhiji and killing him.

At present, there exists a temple in his name in Meerut which is attended by many people every year.
