The entire country is celebrating Raksha Bandhan, the unique bond between a brother and sister, today. The day also holds much significance as it is also the last day of the auspicious Shrawan month.

As per Hindu mythology, the day also marks the full moon of Shukla Paksha of the month of Shrawan. It is also called as Shrawan Purnima and other names like Nariyal Purnima and Kajari Purnima in other parts of the country.

For the Hindus, the entire month of Shrawan holds much religious significance. It is one of holiest months as people worship Lord Shiva and offer special prayers throughout the month, especially on Shrawan Somvar (Monday).

Devotees mostly invoke Lord Shiva and offer a variety of articles including Bilva (Bela) Patra during puja. Apart from doing Abhishek with milk and water, devotees also chant Mahamrityunjay Mantra to appease the God.

From Shravan Purnima day, 40 day Ashtalakshmi Prayog begins and people perform special puja to remove their financial hurdles.

The auspicious time for tying the rakhi will begin at 6:15 AM on August 22 and continue till 5:31 PM the evening. Some people also keep a fast on this day and take a dip while performing special pujas to pray for the wellbeing of their family, peace and prosperity.
