Pakhala Dibasa celebrated in Cuttack, Odisha
Today marks Pakhala Dibasa, an occasion dedicated to indulging in Odisha's beloved traditional dish, 'pakhala'. The ‘rice and water’ known as ‘Pakhala Bhata’ holds a special place in the cuisine of Odisha.
Renowned for its simplicity and adaptability, Pakhala boasts several versions, each with distinct flavours and cooking methods. Some love to enhance it with yogurt or curd, while others prefer a simpler approach, merely seasoning it with a pinch of salt.
And today March 20 happens to be Pakhala Dibasa. This day is celebrated with enthusiasm across the state, and by Odia communities worldwide, bringing together people to enjoy iterations like hot pakhala, cumin-infused varieties, and fermented rice versions.
In the spirit of community, the city of Cuttack, often referred to as the city of brotherhood, hosted an early Pakhala Dibasa celebration led by a local Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). Guests at the event appreciated pakhala alongside a selection of traditional accompaniments such as curd, potato chutney, leafy greens, badi chura, fried aubergine, and potato chips.
The Jay Jagannath Seva Samiti extended an invitation to the dedicated staff of Cuttack's SCB Medical College and Hospital, applauding their relentless service to patients. These healthcare professionals were honoured with gifts and formal recognitions during the celebration.
The essence of Pakhala Divas transcended cultural boundaries, engaging numerous organisations across Cuttack with unique festivities. Notably, members of the Muslim community participated, embodying the inclusive ethos of the celebration. Ejaz Mohammed, a participant, mentioned that during Ramadan, he planned to break his fast with dates followed by pakhala.
The event saw invited guests being warmly welcomed with flowers, sandalwood, and scarves, reflecting traditional gestures of respect. The celebrations culminated with all attendees, including organisational leaders and guests, partaking in pakhala together, appreciating its health benefits.
The attendees unanimously noted that apart from being delightful, pakhala offers numerous health advantages, helping to ward off various ailments.
