National Consumer Rights Day is a day that emphasizes the power and rights of consumers and customers. It is celebrated every year on December 24 to make people aware of their rights as consumers.

Who is a consumer?

Before you become aware of your rights it is important to understand the definition of consumer as per the Indian Law. It says that anyone who consumes goods or makes use of any service and pays for it is a consumer. So a consumer can be anyone who purchases groceries, food items, or even services and is paying for them.

Significance of National Consumer Rights Day

Celebrating this day is very important because it involves the give and take of money between the buyer and the seller. Since misunderstanding, wrong or inappropriate service, or giving wrong or faulty product can bring loss to the consumer mentally as well as financially, the consumer must know where he can take action against such incidences.

More often, consumers are duped while selling products in weight, or quality. When you know that you have been cheated, you should raise your voice, complain, and get the product replaced. If the seller does not give a positive response then you can use your consumer rights and fight for justice.

The Indian government has fixed rates and prices for most of the services and goods and every seller must sell the products or services at or below MRP. If the seller tries to trick you or sell a product at a higher rate than MRP you can file a complaint at the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).
