Those killing self, forgetting who they leave behind to suffer: On World Suicide Prevention Day 5 things youths must realise
Every year thousands of people take their own lives. These people take their own lives to be free from their miseries. However, they overlook the suffering they leave behind; grieving family, friends and close ones. Suicide has emerged as a global health crisis, especially among the younger generation. Undeniably, there are multiple factors that contribute to this tragic decision. But, suicide is not the answer to end the miseries.
It's crucial to address the devastating impact of suicide which can be done by raising awareness on the pressing issue. World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 worldwide to spread awareness and encourage efforts to prevent/reduce suicide.
According to psychologists, various pressures, mental depression, family and financial issues, problems in relationships, and substance abuse are some of the key reasons for suicide. To prevent it, it's crucial to identify the symptoms of issues like anxiety and depression and treat those at the right time. Moreover, people experiencing distress should open up and talk to their family members or friends. No one should think of suicide as the ultimate solution to their problems. Rather, one must face life with courage.
Psychologist, Dr Amrit Pattjoshi says, "How disciplined are you? How is your diet? Are you doing exercise/physical activities or not? Are you developing hobbies or not? Do you show respect to elders or not? After losing, do you ever go and congratulate the winner or not? All these things are very crucial."
"Sometimes your score will be higher, sometimes lower. We must put in our efforts. We don't let a child fall till 10 to 18 years. After that, when the child falls, he/she is unaware of how to rise, as they don't have previous experience. They don't know what falling really means," says Dr Pattjoshi.
Dr Pattjoshi adds, "Suddenly, when the child is going for Plus Two, Plus Three, engineering, or medical, or whichever profession they are pursuing, the stress increases there and they are unable to cope. Why? Because we haven't taught them how to fall and that life exists beyond this. We've kept them in a protected environment, showing them only one point of view. So, in my opinion, we should focus on the overall development of our children."
