At least two labourers died after drowning in Kharla river in Sambalpur district on Saturday. The mishap occurred when the labourers were taking a bath in the river after completing day’s work.

A pall of gloom descended on the area as the tragic mishap occurred on the occasion of Holi today. As per reports, both the deceased hail from outside the state and their bodies were recovered by a team of Odisha Fire Services personnel.

Meanwhile, Holi revelry took an ugly turn in Keonjhar after five persons were injured following a group clash at Gadabandhagoda village. The condition of two persons is said to be critical and they have been shifted to Cuttack.

As per reports, the clash occurred after a group of villagers allegedly started pelting stones at another group which was busy playing Holi. Sources said that there was simmering tension between the two groups over the recently concluded panchayat polls.

Similarly, three persons were also injured in a group clash that reportedly erupted during Holi celebrations at Gobindapur village under Soro police limits in Balasore district. All injured have been admitted to Soro hospital.

Sundergarh Road Mishap

At least three persons of a family, including a 3-year-old girl, were killed in an accident near Lahangapada at Bonai in Sundergarh district on Saturday. While the minor died on the spot, the father and mother of the deceased minor succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

Murder In Ganjam

A youth was allegedly hacked to death by miscreants at Polasara in Ganjam district. The deceased has been identified as Amit Acharya. As per reports, unidentified miscreants chased and attacked Acharya with swords and other sharp weapons late Friday night.

Pavitra Rout, Banchapali Sarpanch said, “We condemn the incident and appeal administration to take stern action against the miscreants.”

Purushottampur SDPO, Suryamani Pradhan said, “The youth was attacked last night when he was returning home on his motorcycle. Three persons were involved in the brutal murder. It is suspected that the deceased was attacked over past enmity.”
