  • As per the APEC Climate Centre, Feb will be record above normal temperature in the districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Khordha and Puri.

The time is up for winter in Odisha. From this weekend, the mercury will go northbound. The minimum temperature in coastal, southern, central and northern Odisha will range between 20-16 deg C. The morning temperature will hover at around 12 deg C in western Odisha.

In the backdrop of the prediction by IMD, the national weather agency's outlook for February temperature assumes much significance for the State.

As per IMD,  during the month of February 2022, below normal minimum temperatures are most likely over most parts of the country except eastern parts of northeast India, south peninsular India and south-eastern parts of central India, where normal to above normal
minimum temperatures are likely.

Below normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country except along the eastern and south-western coastal areas of peninsular India where it is likely to be normal to above normal

Will Odisha Be Hotter?

A look at the maps released by IMD, while the minimum temperature in Feb in Odisha will remain normal, the outlook for maximum temperature in the State during the month of February will remain below normal (see the maps below).

However, as per the long-range forecast of IMD, besides Mayurbhanj, the coastal Odisha districts like Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and southern Odisha districts will record a maximum temperature 2-3 deg C above normal Feb maximum temperature from Feb 18 onwards.

This shows the last fortnight of Feb in the above districts will be warmer, though central and western Odisha districts are predicted to experience below normal temperature.

The summary outlook is maximum temperature in the above districts will rise to 34-35 deg C during the last fortnight of February.

APEC Climate Centre Seconds IMD  

As per the APEC Climate Centre, Feb will be record above normal temperature in the districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Khordha and Puri.

The prediction by the ace weather agency shows that Feb in the districts in Odisha will be warmer this year.

The prediction by APEC shows that the states like coastal Odisha, north-eastern states, the whole of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will record above normal temperature in the month of February, whereas the whole of north, Central, eastern India will measure below normal temperature in February.

2021 Recap

Significantly, in the last week of February 2021, the maximum temperature in Khordha, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore, Angul and Mayurbhanj districts were around 5 deg C above the normal maximum temperature.

The Bottom line

However, as per the predictions by APEC and IMD, Feb 2022 will not witness the hot weather and sweltering heat conditions of Feb 2021.
