  • It seems high time for Odisha to take a leaf out of Indore's book to secure a place among the top job creators in the country. The country's cleanest city scores over Odisha's Smart city (Bhubaneswar) in job creation. Both are tier-2 cities. But when Bhubaneswar stands nowhere in the top - 15 hiring cities dominated by tier -1 cities, Indore ranked at 14th in the country. Both the cities have an IIT. Though Indore has an IIM, the Odisha IIM is in Sambalpur.

Notwithstanding the disastrous run of the second wave in India, the hiring intent in the country looks quite bright. Though metro and tier 1 cities are predicted to emerge as job engines in the coming quarters of the year, tier-2 cities will also see higher job creation. But no single city from Odisha figures in the list.

As per the TeamLease Employment Outlook Report 2021, 14 cities in the country will see maximum hiring activities. And the cities are Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Ahmedabad,  Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Gurgaon, Coimbatore, Nagpur, Kochi and Indore.

Meanwhile, an earlier hiring intent 2021 report prepared by Wheebox has also given a thumbs down to Odisha. The report has listed a total of 8 states - Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - where the hiring intent will be high in the year 2021.

A look at both the reports show that be it in the states or Cities list, Odisha fails to book a spot as a prominent job engine in the country.

The Indore Mirror

It seems high time for Odisha to take a leaf out of Indore's book to secure a place among the top job creators in the country.

Indore, the commercial city of Madhya Pradesh, is mineral-rich but not iron or aluminium. Still, the city listed itself among the top job engines in the country by virtue of the following industries.

  • The city has a cluster of manufacturing industries like Pharma, Namkeen, Rechargeable torches, Automobile, plastic etc, besides its traditional industrial cluster of readymade garments and textiles.
  • Automobile, pharma, Namkeen (food processing) and textiles are considered job magnets, hence the city emerged as a top job creator in the country.

On the contrary, despite having raw materials like iron and aluminium, Odisha has no footprint of auto manufacturing units. The State lacks in with the presence of pharma industries too. The State fares poor in the density of food processing industries. As a consequence, Odisha, neither as State nor as City, figures among the top hiring places in 2021.
