The mood swing of the weather in Odisha has begun. Even as, more rains are predicted in the next 24 hours, there is the forecast of a heavy rainfall spell- five days hence. Come March, the weather will be simply scorching the State.

As per the prediction made by models like US-NCEP, IITM-EPS, the State is going to record surplus rainfall (around 20 percent) between Feb 25 and March 2. From March 3, the coastal belt will sizzle with a maximum daytime temperature of over 37 deg C.

The whole of the State, except Mayurbhanj, is predicted to record maximum day time temperature hovering over 37 deg C from March 10 onwards. And the nagging forecast is, the State is unlikely to receive any rainfall from March 3 to March 16. The State has to brace up for the hotter days ahead.

Marching Mercury?

But the respite forecast has been that IMD's long-range model predicts that the maximum daytime temperature in the State is not going to touch anywhere near 39-40 deg C till March 17.

However, as per the IMD model forecast, the State will be witnessing hotter days as the maximum temperature between March 3 and 17 is going to remain 2-4 Deg C more than the average normal maximum daytime temperature of around 33-35 deg C in the month of March across the State.

There is a prediction of a rise in the morning mercury level across the State from March 3 onwards. The minimum temperature will hover over 20 deg C in the coastal, southern, central and north Odisha from March 10. However, the predicted morning temperatures in the State will be nearly 2-3 deg C below the normal March month minimum temperatures of 22.3 deg C in the State.

Sultry weather for Odisha has been predicted by IMD from Mar 4-17. The model shows weaker winds at the low level over the State during the period. The period between Mar 11-17 will be hotter, the model forecast reveals.

As per the data available with IMD, in last March, the daytime maximum temperature in over most parts of Odisha had been measured at around 38 deg C, except for the districts adjoining Chhattisgarh where the mercury brimmed at around 40 deg C.

The whole State had experienced heatwave conditions on March 30 and 31, last year.

Rain Forecast

As per the satellite data, heavy rain-bearing clouds are approaching towards the State Capital Bhubaneswar. The clouds are over Nayagarh in the evening hours today. The places in Nayagarh, Cuttack and Khordha districts will witness light to heavy rainfall in the next 4-5 hours.

Rain is also likely in the night hours in the districts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Puri.

Feb 25: heavy rain forecast for all districts bordering Chhattisgarh, Boudh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Balasore etc. The rainfall will be in the range of 2mm/hour.

However, the State Capital Bhubaneswar is likely to be spared from the heavy rains next week. But the skies will display cloud patches between Feb 25 and 26.
