  • Even as the case fatality rate in Odisha increased marginally to 0.72 per cent in the second wave from around 0.5 per cent in the first wave, three districts recorded over 1 per cent case fatality rate in the State. The table is led by Bargarh with a case fatality rate of 1.3 per cent and is followed by Jharsuguda (1.26%) and Khordha (1.01%), respectively.

The second wave has taken a severe toll on Odisha. The State has been ranked among the top ten states in the country that have recorded higher positive cases during the second wave. Moreover, Khordha district figured among the top-40 in the indices of Covid-19 positive tally.

As per the IIT Kanpur report, Odisha with over 6.54 lakh cumulative positive cases till mid-August has been ranked as the 10th state with high cumulative coronavirus cases during the second wave. The dubious table is led by Maharashtra with over 43 lakh cases and is followed by Kerala with over 26 lakh cases.

While the infection rate in the State is measured at around 1.45 per cent, Kerala leads the table with a high infection rate of 7.3 per cent.

With regards to the total Covid-19 mortality in the second wave, the State with 4,720 deaths till the end of the second week of August has been at the 16th rank among the 20 major states.

The District Map

Among the 742 districts in the country, two districts  - Khordha and Cuttack - figured in the top-100 districts with high confirmed cases in the second wave. A total of 7 districts figure in the top-200 high caseload districts in the country. The other districts are - Sundargarh, Puri, Angul, Mayurbhanj and Ganjam (this district is figuring in the top-200 by virtue of the first wave tally).

In terms of the number of fatalities, Khordha district figured at 56th rank national with 1,442 deaths till date, including the first wave count. Cuttack with a toll of 745 has been ranked at 127 in the country.

In the top-200 districts, a total of 5 districts are from Odisha. The other districts are Sundargarh, Puri and Ganjam.

Khordha (92 rank) is the only district from Odisha to figure in the top-100 districts in the country having a high active caseload. With 784 active caseload, Cuttack district has been ranked at 129 in the country.

Vaccination Map  

In the indicator of the proportion of the population vaccinated till date, data shows two Odisha districts in the top-100 in the country. While Khordha by virtue of vaccinating fully around 41 per cent of the population ranked number 2 in the country,  with 18.84 percent Ganjam has been ranked at 94 in the country.

The states that dominate the top-100 fully vaccinated districts are Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat, Assam and other northeastern states.

The above data shows for having a faster vaccination rate, Odisha needs a booster dose.
