  • Even as the State will be shivering with the mercury dropping to around 8 deg C for the next 48 hours, the minimum temperature in the State Capital will remain at around d13 deg C for the next 48 hours. No rainfall is predicted for the Capital City till Jan 11.

Odisha will record cold wave conditions for the next 48-hours. The minimum temperature is predicted to rise from January 5. The State is unlikely to witness any sweeping cold wave till January 14 (Makar Sankranti Day).

As per the model forecast by IMD and ACCESS-G3, the mercury in half of the State, especially western and northern and a few southern districts will witness the mercury plummeting to 8 deg C on Jan 4 (Tuesday). The minimum temperature across the State on Monday will hover around 10 deg C.

However, the life span of the cold wave in Odisha will be only 48-hrs. From Jan 5, the minimum temperature in the State will rise over 16 deg C. The rise in mercury level is attributed to an intense western disturbance hitting northwest India from around Jan 7.

Though under the influence of the intense system widespread light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorm over the plains of northwest and adjoining central India is very much likely during Jan 07-09,  isolated heavy rains, along with hailstorm, is predicted over Rajasthan and adjoining areas of West Madhya Pradesh on Jan 8, and over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on Jan 9.

Odisha Impact

Even as the whole of the northwest, northern and Central India will witness heavy rainfall and hailstorm on Jan 8 and 9, the big respite for farmers of Odisha is, the State is unlikely to record even a millimetre of rainfall.

Moreover, the minimum temperature in the State till Jan 9 will hover around 14-16 deg C.

However, the nighttime temperature across the State is predicted to hover around 12 deg C till Wednesday night. The mercury will gradually rise from Thursday.
