The dance performance by Wednesday Addams in the fourth episode of the Netflix series “Wednesday” has caught everyone’s attention. In a 3 minute long sequence, Wednesday, played by actor Jenna Ortega is seen stealing the show with a very unconventional gothic dance, in a school prom!
The dance has hit the right chord among people and it has become a Tik Tok trend. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian have jumped on the trend too. Appeal of the dance lies in the weirdness of it. Youngsters are relating to it because it breaks the conventional barriers of a prom dance - she is being herself and not trying to mould in.
Wednesday Addams is a character from the comic strip “The Addams Family” by an American cartoonist, Charles Addams. Many adaptations of the comic have been made in forms of live action films, animated films and TV series. The series “Wednesday” is the latest spin off, based on the character of Wednesday Addams. The dark and sadistic personality of the character is what makes her unique. Wednesday is obsessed with death and mysteries, which also becomes the basic plot for the series.
Jenna Ortega plays the character of Wednesday Addams in the series. She has choreographed the famous dance sequence herself. It is reported that she had got the song “Go Goo Muck” by The Cramps, just a week before shoot. In an interview, she said she pulled the dance from whatever she could. She seems to have drawn inspiration from the 80s Goth Subculture. The Wednesday dance is not only an ode to taking pride in being a misfit but also an ode to unapologetic self expression.
