Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah regained its number 1 spot on the TRP rating last week dethroning the current popular serial Anupamaa. TMKOC has been a hot favourite among Indian viewers for more than a decade but in the last couple of years, the hit comedy show has been struggling to stay in the top 5 in the TRP ranking as new family dramas took up their place.
Many critics and fans earlier said that Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been struggling because some of its lead characters like Disha Vakani who played the popular character of Dayaben or Gurucharan Singh who played the role of Sodhi has been absent from the show for a long time. However, that does not seem to be the case.
While Disha has been away from TMKOC for almost four years now, Dilip Joshi aka Jethalal has been a constant feature on the show. But recently he took a break from the shooting for the wedding of his daughter. So, Asit Kumarr Modi and the team had to shoot a few episodes without him. The 'karele wala' episodes with Mehtasaab in the lead have been a smashing hit and so much so that it has also made TMKOC regain its lost number one position after a very long gap.
However, it is not only the content in these episodes of TMKOC but also the melodrama in the other serials like Anupamaa, Imili, Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin, and others that have made the audience switch once again to Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. These serials have been dragging the same storyline for a long period which made watching the episodes boring and quite predictable.
Instead, the 'karela wala bhoot' in TMKOC was an entirely new concept that kept the audience hooked, and hence the serial gained such high TRP last week.
