Zubeen Garg
Guwahati came to a standstill on Sunday as thousands thronged the streets to pay their last respects to iconic singer Zubeen Garg, whose mortal remains were brought to the city in a 25-km-long procession from the airport to his Kahilipara residence.
The convoy, carrying Garg’s body, took nearly five-and-a-half hours to cover the distance from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport as people lined the roads, showering flowers on the ambulance. The emotionally charged atmosphere saw elderly people, women, children, youngsters, and even differently abled persons braving the scorching heat to catch a final glimpse of the beloved artist.
The procession moved through the Gauhati University campus in Jalukbari and along National Highway 27 before reaching Kahilipara. Every balcony, terrace, and roadside divider was filled with grieving fans, many chanting Garg’s name and offering prayers with folded hands.
At his residence, security forces restricted entry to family and close friends, allowing his 85-year-old ailing father and relatives to pay their last respects. According to the schedule, the body will later be kept at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex to enable the public to bid farewell.
Zubeen Garg, who mesmerised fans for over three decades with more than 38,000 songs in 40 languages, leaves behind a lasting legacy in Indian music.
